FORT PORTAL - The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has called for smooth and peaceful transition of power in Uganda.

Muntu, who was campaigning at Karago town council in Fort Portal city northern division, Thursday (November 26, 2020) decried the fact that Ugandans have never witnessed a peaceful transfer of power since independence.

He urged leaders to promote and embrace smooth power transition as an important element of good governance.

"We need peaceful change in Uganda; we have never witnessed a president handing over power in our country.

"The transition we need must be a peaceful one because we need peace in Uganda. If we make any mistake, we shall cause chaos and insecurity in the country.

"Leaders should work together for the development of the country and there should be further appreciation of multiparty dispensation by recognising the role each political party plays," he said.

He blamed the Police and the security agencies for what he called failing his rallies in Kamwenge and intimidating his supporters.

"Our supporters are being intimidated by the security agencies, but all those are signs of a falling regime. We shall not lose focus because of the intimidations that our people are going through," Muntusaid.

If elected, Muntu said he will put more emphasis on economic empowerment for women, improve the education system to providequality education for all, improve security for women, ensure inclusive decision making process at all levels and equitable resource distribution in the country, among others.

"We need to design programmes that will help Ugandans to overcome poverty and create jobs for the unemployed youth," Muntu said.

He said Toro has abundant resources, such as national parks, fertile soils, and natural forests that, he says, if well utilised, can cause tremendous development in the region, but that for the last 35 years, the National Resistance Movement government has "abandoned the region".

Robert Rwakasenyi, the ANT candidate for Fort Portal city mayoral seat, said unknown people have been defacing their campaign posters.

"Even when the party president is busy campaigning in the district, some people are busy intimidating our supporters and also defacing our campaign posters in town.

"We shall continue preaching the message of peace and unity; even when we are being harassed and intimidated, we shall proceed with our campaigns," Rwakasenyi added.

Robert Musinguzi, a resident of Karago, said they need the roads in the area to be fixed because most of them are in bad condition.

He said the bad roads hinder transportation of their products to the markets.
