Uganda U20 volleyball team camp shut down

Nov 26, 2020

The national U20 ladies volleyball team that has been camping at Boni Consilii Girls SS in Isingiro district, has been closed and the players sent home after a month of training.

The team of 20 players handled by head coach Alex Mbaine and assisted by three others, had been going under intensive preps for the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) organised the U20 girls competition that was due in Kampala in early December.

The cancellation comes a fortnight after CAVB president-elect Bouchra Hajij directed the suspension of all volleyball activities on the CAVB calendar until 2021.

While officially seeing off the players in a mini function organised on Monday evening, team manager Salma Kairungi advised the players to keep doing personal training to keep the fitness they had regained.

"It's upon your personal discipline and commitment that you have to keep focused on the tournament because it may come early next year. So please bother yourselves with continued work out to keep your bodies fit," Kairungi said.

Team head coach Alex Mbaine who disappointed with the cancelation will be tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the players' activities.

"I have warned them not to sit back as they did during the lockdown, I have told them to keep working out not to lose the fitness," Mbaine said.

By the time of the cancellation of the event, UVF was still looking for sh105m from NCS for camping and participation and this would give the federation some ample time to prepare adequately.
