MASAKA - Masaka Chief Magistrate's Court has granted bail to 57 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who were arrested over allegations of violating the COVID-19 guidelines.
The suspects were granted bail on Friday ( November 20, 2020) evening on a non-cash bond of sh200,000 each, before the Masaka Grade One Magistrate Arthur Ziraba.
Fifteen other suspects were remanded to the Ssazza Central Prison in Masaka, after failing to meet the bail terms.
Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament Babirye Kabanda stood surety for many of the suspects.
Kabanda also stood surety for over 30 suspects attached to NUP at the Masaka Central Police Station.
The NUP flag-bearers were arrested at the home of Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga in Soweto, Masaka city, at the start of the riots on Wednesday last week.
Other suspects were rounded up by the Police and army in joint operations during the two-day riots that paralysed Masaka city.
Democratic Party vice-president Dennis Mbidde, who is also the NyendoMukungwe parliamentary candidate, was released on Police bond on Thursday, after he was arrested at Tropic Inn in Masaka city.
Mbidde was arrested at a press conference where he was calling for the release of the NUP president, Robert Kyagulanyi
