NUP's Muhammed Ssegirinya freed on bail

Grade One Magistrate, Happy Ann Komuhangi granted Ssegirinya bail after finding his two sureties substantial.

JINJA - The Jinja Chief Magistrates' Court has granted a non-cash bail of sh1m to NUP's Muhammed Ssegirinya.

Ssegirinya is the Kawempe North councilor at Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) and a parliamentary candidate for the same constituency on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket. 

He is battling charges of using his social media accounts to incite violence, an act that is likely to lead to death of people. According to the prosecution.

Grade One Magistrate, Happy Ann Komuhangi granted Ssegirinya bail after finding his sureties substantial.

"I find the accused's sureties substantial and the bail applications succeed. However, the accused is hereby ordered execute sh1m, not cash and each of his two sureties sh1m, not cash," Komuhangi ruled.

Lawyers Muwada Nkunyingi and Shamim Malende represented the accused, who was arrested last week on Friday at Nalufenya in Jinja as he attempted to secure the release of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Moses Molson Bizitu, the speaker of Jinja City Council, also NUP's regional coordinator for Busoga, and Pastor Andrew Muwanguzi of True Worship centre in Jinja were the accused's sureties.

Nkunyingi revealed that the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament, Nabilah Naggayi, also a NUP flag bearer for the Lord Mayor seat was still on remand, among other members.

The case was adjourned to December 15, 2020, for mention.
