US condemns electoral violence in Uganda

The United States Mission in Uganda has condemned the electoral violence which left some people dead and scores injured following the arrest of the National Unity Platform's Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi. 

 In a statement on tweeter, the US noted, "The United States deplores the violence that has claimed multiple lives today, and we extend our sympathy to the victims' families and loved ones." 

"We urge all parties to renounce violence, undertake good-faith measures to reduce tensions, and respect fundamental freedoms." 

At least three people have died and 40 have been injured after protests erupted in Uganda following the arrest of Kyagulanyi. 

Protestors in Kampala city and some parts of the country blocked roads and burned tyres, while police and the military responded by firing tear gas and live bullets. 

The protestors in various parts of the country, also directly attacked people and the security personnel. In the course of exchange, some people lost their lives, property was destroyed and scores of people were injured in various parts of the country. 

Amongst the people that the Red Cross rescued in Uganda on Wednesday, it says that that 11 of them had bullet wounds.
