Red Cross rescues 30, eleven with gunshot wounds

KAMPALA - Over 30 people were rescued by Red Cross today following riots arising from the arrest of Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi by police.

Of those rescued by Uganda Red Cross Response Action Teams; 11 had gunshot wounds.

A statement from Red Cross says, "We received alerts from deployed response action teams to support people whose lives were at stake."

It adds that of those rescued, nine had suffocation issues, 10 were unconscious, there was one RTA (Road Traffic Accident), and one other person in shock.

Of those rescued, 22 were women. The Red Cross says it deployed eight ambulances and 40 First Aiders in areas of Mengo, Kitebi, Gayaza, Wakiso, and along Entebbe road.

It also says they deployed in Arua Park, Kampala road, King Fahad Plaza, New taxi park, Kamwokya, Kisaasi, Kabuusu, and Nansana. Others are in Kisenyi, Nakivubo, Salaama Road, Katwe, and Wilson Street as of 6:00 pm.

The Red Cross says, "Teams are still on ground since some areas are still experiencing chaotic scenes."

The Uganda Police says they arrested Kyagulanyi, and Pr Andrew Muwanguzi for their continued violations of the Electoral Commission and Ministry Of Health guidelines, during the political campaigns.

"We would like to inform the public that the Joint Security Task Force in Busoga North, today arrested the NUP Presidential candidate, Kyagulanyi, for his continued violations of the Electoral Commission and Ministry Of Health guidelines, during the political campaigns. He was arrested together with Pastor Muwanguzi Andrew at around 11:30 am, at the Ssaza Grounds, Luuka Town Council in Luuka District. The two were actively involved in massive mobilization of assemblies and processions amidst the threat of Covid-19 in Uganda. The majority of the participants had no safeguards of facemasks, physical distancing, and proper hygiene," Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed.

Enanga noted that the two were immediately transferred to Nalufenya Police Station, where they were being interrogated on charges of negligent conduct likely to spread infectious disease, obstruction, and holding unauthorized assemblies.

"In the course of their transportation, 5 other violent suspects were arrested too. These included; Ssenono Denis alias Deni-City resident of Keti Falawo Kawempe, Semanda Brian of Nakilagala Budo; Matovu Adam, Tenywa Jamali of Kyamagwa Jinja, and Akol Stephene a Security guard from Kiira Road. In a separate development, the FDC presidential candidate," Enanga added.
