Kisenyi traders grapple with overflowing sewage

Nov 18, 2020

The problem started during the Monday morning downpour

Business in Kisenyi almost came to a standstill due to overflowing sewage from Nakivubo Channel.

The sewage was blocking the access road built over a section of the Nakivubo Channel that is being used as an access road for vehicles and pedestrians to and from the Taxi Park and shopping malls in the area.

Traders who normally display their merchandise by the roadside were forced to relocate to other places while others decided to withstand the situation.

The problem started during the Monday morning downpour and went into the following day.

The business community in the area attributed the problem to the works that saw a sewer line top which was covered and turned into an access road.

Simon Magezi a general merchandise dealer in Kisenyi said ever since this channel was tampered with, the area becomes a total mess whenever it rains heavily.

"The channel was narrowed and it cannot accommodate the rapidly increasing water volumes," said Magezi.

Some traders however went ahead and displayed their goods including foodstuffs by the affected roadside.

Samuel Apedel the National Water and Sewerage Corporation spokesperson said they have sent a team to fix the problem.

He however advised the public to always alert them whenever such a problem occurs for immediate action.
