African football chief Ahmad Ahmad will stand down from his post for 20 days to recover from coronavirus, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said Friday.

CAF president Ahmad revealed two weeks ago that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

"I have mild symptoms, but I'm well," he wrote on Twitter.

On Friday, CAF said that vice-president Omari Constant would take interim charge until November 30.

"On medical advice, the president of the Confederation of African Football, Mr Ahmad Ahmad, has been prescribed a convalescence period which will last at least 20 days during which he is requested to limit his efforts so as to totally restore his energy," said the statement.

"This unavailability temporarily makes it impossible to conduct the normal duties linked to a function which requires good health.

"In this situation, the first Vice-President Mr Omari Constant will take the interim lead of the CAF executive until 30th November 2020."

Ahmad, 60, has been at the head of CAF since March 2017, succeeding Issa Hayatou, the Cameroon official who had held the post since 1988.
