KAMPALA - The Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has advised the new Kampala district Land Board to put more emphasis on protecting wetlands and road reserves and not fear to face land grabbers.

The newly appointed Chairperson David Balondemu, a lawyer has replaced Yusuf Nsibambi, who joined active politics.

The other board members are Nasser Basajjabalaba, Hajji Hussein Kato, Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, Teopista Ntale Ssekitto, Moses Kamoga, and Joseph Anguria.

Lukwago said, "We have not elected you to go and grab people's land but to put the city in order and fight land grabbers."

He also called upon the board to ensure that all the land that was taken from KCCA should be returned.

The board has been vacant for three months without a leader ever since the former chairperson Nsibambi's term ended.

Lukwago called upon the board to ensure that all the land that was taken from KCCA is returned.

Balondemu revealed that the board has very many pending land cases which they ought to handle since the office has been vacant.

"So we have to ensure that we have these meetings every day with KCCA members to solve all the pending claims," Balondemu said.

Due to very many land wrangles in Kampala, a plot ends up having more than one land title which makes it hard to identify the real owner.

He further noted that due to increased wrangles on market land around Kampala, "There will be a committee set to investigate more on this issue so that the board can decide on the way forward."

It was also revealed that very old buildings whose owners have failed refurbishing them face losing their leases.
