The legal fraternity in the country is mourning following the death of Senior Lawyer Nkambo Mugerwa of Mugerwa, Matovu and Co. Advocates.
He passed on on Monday over COVID-19 related illness.
Distraught family members on Wednesday declined to reveal the cause of the death of the 90 -year-old Mugerwa, however, sources at the Ministry of Health confirmed he had tested positive for Covid-19 and died while receiving treatment.
Mugerwa previously worked as the Minister of Justice and was also a senior lecturer at the University of Dar-es-Salam.
Former Buganda Kingdom Attorney General, Apollo Makubuya, a seasoned Lawyer and academician described the late Mugerwa as an icon and a trailblazer within the legal fraternity in the country.
Makubuya noted that Mugerwa's death was a personal loss to him because he was his mentor.
He said the deceased had served as the Country's Attorney General in the early 1960s, served the Kingdom of Buganda and the Kabaka both as the Chairperson of the Buganda Land Board and Senior Advisor to the Kabaka.
"I had the chance of knowing him even before I had joined his legal firm while he was a Director at Bank of Uganda. I benefitted a lot from him and he was one of those people who encouraged me to document the history of Uganda," Makubuya who had written a book about the history of Uganda noted.
Mugerwa will be buried Manze in Busiro in Wakiso district. Sources in the family noted that the family had decided not to hold vigil for the deceased but that they would pray for him on Sunday before his burial.
