Presidential candidate Henry Tumukunde has launched his campaigns in Rukungiri district.

He arrived at 1:15 pm accompanied by his son, also an aspirant for Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat, Amanya Tumukunde, and his elder sister, Mable Ruharo.

The function that lasted for only 45 minutes on Tuesday was attended by close to 800 people.

Tumukunde complained that police intercepted his supporters at Nyakibale who had accompanied him from his home in Buyanja.

"There was no better place to launch my presidential campaigns than here due to the support you have exhibited," he said.

Tumukunde said he had a bigger group of people from Buyanja and Kebisoni who Police sprayed tear gas and beat seriously.

"My supporters are already admitted at Nyakibale hospital, I am going to Kanungu and come back to see them, but whoever was involved in beating up my people here at home will regret it several times," he said.

Tumukunde promised three major things for Rukungiri once he is elected president.

"When I was a minister, I told you I will work on Rukungiri University and district hospital, which I will work on in the first year as president. I'm also going to tarmac all roads in the town," he said.

Tumukunde apologized to those he could have wronged when he was still serving in government, especially those in the Opposition party of FDC.

"I want to work with those who started opposition 20 years ago and those who joined yesterday for the good of our country," he said.

Tumukunde who represented Rubabo County in the Constituency Assembly in 1994 said he will use the tactics he used to win in Rubabo to win the presidency of this country.

Over 10 members who coordinated his 1994 campaigns headed by Emmanuel Nuwamanya, the former deputy RDC were present and handed him a spear, shield, and stool.

Tumukunde said he was overwhelmingly excited to find his former campaign agents.

My work is going to be easier because this group knows how we did it the other time, they will direct us," he said.

Tumukunde urged his supporters not to be intimidated and advised them to keep around the polling stations until the counting is done.

"This question of saying you will vote and go will not work, you must protect our votes until we are declared winners," he said.

Amanya Tumukunde, who is also contesting for a parliamentary seat said he was not supporting Tumukunde because he is his father but he is a tested leader who can lead this country peacefully.

"Besides being my biological father, he is surely a real leader who can unite the whole country and develop it in a few days," he said.

He added that when he is elected Member of Parliament representing Rukungiri in Tumukunde's regime as president, he will change the face of Rukungiri Municipality and its citizens and would not seek re-election for a second term.

Justus Mwesigwa, a former aide to Henry Tumukunde said he is contesting for the LCV seat to be able to work with Tumukunde for the development of their district.
