EC to support candidates' movements during curfew

Nov 10, 2020

Curfew in the country starts at 9:00 pm till 6:00 am, during the ongoing lockdown, due to COVID-19.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is in the process of working out modalities with security teams around the country, to clear Presidential Candidates and their teams who might have to move past the curfew time during the ongoing campaign period.

Curfew in the country starts at 9:00 pm till 6:00 am, during the ongoing lockdown, due to COVID-19.

However, Paul Bukenya, while being interviewed by the media this morning noted, "We are aware that the Presidential Candidates have limited time to move to various parts of the country during the night. We have asked them to avail us all their programmes for radio and television shows, and we will also look at their campaign schedules, to help them in their night movements."

"We will also support some of the people at the local government level, who may be involved in related activities," he noted.

He, however, noted that all campaigns should start at 7 am and end at 6 pm in the evening.
Much as the government on Monday, November 9 eased the lockdown restrictions, the curfew time was maintained.

Bukenya's response comes days after appeals from some of the Presidential candidates, to have the curfew lifted during the campaigns.

Opposition and independent Presidential aspirants have asked the EC to ensure that an overnight curfew is suspended during their campaigns for the 2021 elections.

This is one of the demands the 10 cleared aspirants and their agents made on Thursday, October 29 while meeting EC on the final preparations for the nomination of presidential aspirants and other issues under the roadmap for 2020/2021 general elections.

At the end of August, Museveni instructed the police to tighten enforcement on curfew for commuter motorists, bodabodas, private and public transport, among others.
