MBARARA - There is unusual presence of both UPDF soldiers and police officers on the streets of Mbarara city. Patrols are going on.

As early 7:00 am, there was a roadblock a few kilometres from the city centre on Masaka road near Makenke barracks, where vehicles were checked. According to officers who spoke to New Vision, this was a normal security operation and there was nothing special about it.

In Mbarara town, there are patrols on Lugazi Road, High street, and Buremba-Kakoba road.

Abbasa Byakagaba, the director of counter-terrorism, who doubles as the Zonal commander Ankore-Kigezi, had earlier on said they will not give a chance to any group of people who want to go against the Electoral Commission guidelines and Standard operating procedures.

Byakagaba, however, noted they will provide all it takes to ensure that National Unity Platform launches its manifesto on Saturday within specified guidelines for safety.

Meanwhile, Bright Muhumuza and Pius Twesigye, both coordinators of National Unity Platform were granted bail by Grade One magistrates' court after spending three days in Police custody.

They were arrested on Tuesday from their offices on Makhan Singh Street after they were suspected of trying to organize a procession to celebrate the nomination of Robert Kyagulanyi as a presidential candidate.

Bruno Muhanguzi, a lawyer to the accused persons requested the court to grant his clients bail after presenting substantial sureties.

The prosecution did not reject the sureties and Gordon Muhimbise later granted the duo a non-cash bail of sh2m.

However, Muhimbise warned them to ensure that they conduct themselves well in public before he adjourned the case to December 15, 2020.
