Consider your partner's psychological well-being

RELATIONSHIP & DATING

He or she might have it all and you think that you are ready for the next big step. But have you thought about your partner's psychological well-being?

It should be taken seriously and given its due weight in decision-making.

However, if the worries preceding a wedding should be as strong as to cause a panic attack or an anxiety disorder, then that should be seen as an adjustment issue that can be overcome with counselling and support.

Thus, it should not be held against the bride or groom-to-be for them "to meltdown", because the moment itself is full of emotional challenges.

We wish to end these comments by further highlighting the value of the decision that individuals make when they choose to wed; the role of their unique families where they come from; the gift of their friendships and communities surrounding them as crucial in formulating who and what they become.

Additionally, we strongly propose that the role of mental health and mental hygiene or psychological well-being and its principles in promoting optimal functioning should be used in every marriage and in every family unit.

This also does include the capacity to go into safe and competent conflict resolution, should there be disagreements in a way that respects the integrity of the individual, and addresses the difficulties that must be overcome.
