Bugiri district to host Fisheries Day

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, is expected to be the chief guest at the event.

Bugiri district is set to host this year's World Fisheries Day, slated for Saturday, November 21.

The event which will be held scientifically is expected to be attended by only 70 people at Waka Waka landing site.

The Chief Administrative Officer Bugiri, Ezaruku Kazimiro, said the celebrations will commence with an exhibition at the Waka Waka landing site in Bulidha sub.

Kazimiro said Bugiri district has been offered a chance to host the event for its exemplary performance in handling funds meant to improve cage fish farming at Waka Waka landing site funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

"Over 2000 women are now benefiting from the program meant to improve household incomes," he said

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, is expected to be the chief guest at the event.

The district fisheries officer Bugiri, Immaculate Were, urged locals to embrace government programs as a way of improving their household incomes.

Were said following the introduction of Uganda Peoples Defense Forces, (UPDF), to man the lakes across the country in fighting illegal fishing habits, there has been an improvement in the fish catch unlike in the past.
