ELECTION WATCH | PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION
With two days remaining to next week's nomination for presidential candidates, only ten of the 58 people who picked forms have been cleared, according to the latest update from the Electoral Commission (EC).
Notable absentees on the list include DP presidential flagbearer, Norbert Mao, and political commentator, Charles Rwomushana, who picked forms in August to stand as an independent.
EC spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, however, has told New Vision that the commission does not rule out more candidates joining the list before Monday.
"We have not closed the door yet, so more people can join the list before deadline day," he said on Saturday.
Among some conditions for clearance for nomination include an aspirant obtaining signatures supporting them from not less than 100 persons, who must be registered voters from not less than 98 districts or two-thirds of all districts in Uganda.
The aspirant must also be a citizen of Uganda aged 18 years and above. They are also required to submit certified copies of educational qualifications, confirming that they obtained minimum formal education of A' level equivalence.
Nominations for presidential nominations will take place on Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3.
According to EC's program, six aspirants will be nominated on Monday. These include President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Henry Tumukunde (independent), John Katumba (independent), Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation), and Nancy Linda Kalembe (independent).
National Unity Platform aspirant, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine; Patrick Oboi Amuriat of Forum for Democratic Change party and Independents; Willy Mayambala, Fred Mwesigye, Joseph Kiiza Kabuleeta will be nominated on Tuesday.
The nomination event will take place at Kyambogo University.
