Tugume can't afford to lose to Nieomoeller

Not more 100 people observing standard operating procedures will be allowed at the Kololo venue

It has been a while since kickboxer Titus Tugume was in the news.

The last time the UPDf fighter was in the headlines, he was losing to arch-rival Moses Golola.

Tugume now has a chance at redemption when he takes on an American opponent at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on December 18.

"He just can't afford to lose. It's a fight we have been working around the clock to ensure victory," Tugume's coach Meddie Ssengendo said.

Tugume has in the process promised Ugandans a huge Christmas gift when he takes on Robert Nieomoeller.

He takes on the Amrerican in Uganda's first ‘scientific' combat sport since advent of the COVID-19.

According to organisers not more 100 people observing standard operating procedures will be allowed at the Kololo venue.

"This is sport. I am going to take him through a few lessons," stated Tugume at a colourful launch of the fight at Green Lounge on Tuesday.

Tugume's employers, Uganda Peoples Defence have promised him full support. Part of this was his elevation to Warrant Officer Class 2 from Sergeant. He is currently attached to the Airforce.

Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Katsigazi, the UPDF Air Force Commander, on Tuesday promised Tugume full support. He is confident Tugume will beat his opponent.

"We are fully behind you. This American is a tourist and treat him as such just like any other future opponents," he said.

Katsigazi revealed that there is also an offer from the Army Commander Gen. David  Muhoozi.

He however appealed to the public not to take Uganda's good sports performance for granted.

"Much as the government has a duty to support sport, you should also know that sports cant thrive without peace. If you want to get this point, try and have kickboxing or a marathon in Mogadishu. Al  Shabaab will kill you.

The UPDF director of personnel and administration Brig. Rebecca Mpagi called for the entire country to support Tugume.

"Even if it means donating a car towards the cause. Do it. If you can buy cars for your pastors and parents, why not also for your sportsmen?"
