HEALTH|BEAUTY

Waxing is not anyone's favorite pastime and unwanted hair just will not stop growing! If you are tired of the bumps that come from razor shaving or applying depilatory cream, maybe it is time you gave waxing a try.

Yes, it stings and hurts but the results are worth it! Can you imagine having smooth skin for four to six weeks?

The additional good news is that with this hair removal method, the regrowth gets thinner and finer with time which means less sting and longer regrowth period. More to that, you can do it at home or at the spa, which ever suits your fancy!
There are two ways you can wax: doing a cold wax or a hot wax.

COLD WAX
You will need:
•    Cold wax ( available in beauty shops in town from sh.15,000 a can)
•    Spatula
•    Waxing strips(available in beauty shops from sh5,000 a pack)
•    Terry cloth or small towel
•    Moisturiser
•    Baby power

Procedure
1.    Remove any oil from the area to be waxed by gently washing it with warm water and soap
2.    Apply a thin film of powder and run your fingers gently over the hair to determine its natural growth direction
3.    Using a clean, dry spatula apply a layer of wax over the hair in the natural hair growth direction and place a waxing strip over it, gently smoothing over to hold  it firmly in place
4.    Place one hand above the area to slightly stretch the skin, then with the other free hand use a firm, swift movement and pull the strip in the opposite direction. Quickly place your palm over the waxed area to soothe the sting before moving on to the next area with a fresh strip.
5.    After the area is waxed, dip a terry cloth in warm water and gently wipe over to remove any remaining wax then apply a soothing lotion to the area.

WARM WAX
You will need:
•    1 cup of sugar
•    ½ cup of water
•    2 tablespoons of lemon juice

Procedure
1.    Pour the ingredients into a small saucepan
2.    Boil for five to seven minutes while stirring continuously
3.    Pour the mixture into a glass bowl and let it cool for about 10 minutes
4.    Apply a layer to clean oil-free dry skin in the natural direction of hair growth and wait afew minutes until it ‘cakes'
5.    Gently peel off the layer in the opposite direction and with with terry cloth
6.    Apply a soothing lotion to the area.

REASONS TO BE CAREFUL
Before you wax, there are a few precautions to take. Do not attempt to wax if:
1.    You have a skin infection, for it can spread
2.    Have a scar that is less than six months old, lest it rips open
3.    You have a fracture or  sprain, because the pain will be unbearable
4.    You have a wound or swelling at, near or around the area to be waxed
5.    You have extremely sensitive skin

DID YOU KNOW?
1.    Waxing originated in Egypt, with women in the court of Ramses III removing all their leg and underarm hair. It is not clear if it was done by choice or if, being part of Ramses' harem, they were fulfilling a desire he expressed.
2.    In the Roman Empire, waxing was popular among men, who preferred their legs completely smooth. Anything from cocoa shell to bats' blood was used, even for eyebrow waxing! In fact waxing the entire body was very common
3.    Waxing large areas of your skin e.g. legs or having a Brazilian wax will be more painful when you are in your period because of the skin's heightened sensitivity during that time.
4.    Exfoliating your skin before you wax will help prevent bumps and ingrown hairs
5.    Massaging coconut oil on the waxed area adds smoothness, softness and further reduces the possibility of bumps.
