Pakwach water levels recede to allow traffic flow

Oct 27, 2020

This is the second time in less than a year that the river is bursting its banks.

The water level that had cut off traffic flow at the Pakwach Bridge on River Nile has receded.

Vehicles can now move across the bridge hours after the Nile burst its banks at Tanga and paralysed transport.

The flooding had disrupted the movement of vehicles and people at the Pakwach Bridge in Nwoya district in northern Uganda.

Despite the rains pounding the area throughout Monday night, the water levels had receded on Tuesday morning and traffic was able to flow.

This is the second time in less than a year that the river is bursting its banks.

In December 2019, the Nile burst its banks and resulted in the blocking of traffic on the Pakwach-Karuma Road for nearly two days.

The Monday evening's re-occurrence had created similar anxiety among the people of the area.

"It has happened again, and it is likely to be more massive than that of last year because I see the river water surging," said Geoffrey Achora, a resident of Pakwach Town Council.

Achora said small vehicles that were coming from West Nile were parked at Pakwach Police Station while those that were destined for the region remained stationed at the bus park, leaving many passengers stranded on Monday night.
