Time and again, gearboxes fail because of age, but in many cases, automatic gearboxes fail because of mishandling and negligence. The automatic gearbox is very sensitive compared to the manual one. The manual gearbox is all treated steel material of all grades and the automatic one has a little steel and soft material.

The manual gearbox will take time to completely break down as it will keep straining at the same time. The automatic gearbox may not have much time left after warning signs. And at any slightest warning of malfunction, the driver must take appropriate action in making sure that they desist from driving and have the car carried on a carrier if they are to avoid further gearbox damage.

Manufacturers of gearboxes design them to use specific gearbox fluid. If the mechanic and serviceman don't know the differences of automatic gearboxes, then they are likely to feed your gearbox with the wrong type of oil that will end up destroying it.

Gearbox dipsticks have inscriptions of the type of gear oil to be used and this must be respected. I know some people who lost their gearboxes because they have been using gear oil that is not the specific type of the manufacturer.

When the gearbox fails, there are chances that it can be repaired.  After the dismantling phase, the specialist can analytically look at the existing parts to assess the extent of damage and advise on what must be done. If it had just got a malfunction and not driven, the chances are high that there won't be extensive damage and the gearbox can be repaired if spare parts are available.

Most gearboxes share parts so in some cases parts shouldn't be a problem.

It is also important to find out the cost of the used gearbox and compare cost. Sometimes it will be easier and cheaper to replace the gearbox because you will not have to deal with gearbox performance evaluation as well as mechanic error.

If you weigh the possibilities you can come up with a credible solution to have your gearbox issues addressed.

The issue is they can be repaired and they function perfectly well. But according to the discretion of the mechanic, if the mechanic recommends a gearbox replacement, don't try to patch and repair the existing one, otherwise, it will be in vain.

Apart from repair issues, part of gearbox care is dealing with leakages. A gearbox that has leakages when neglected can run out of gear oil and seize without any warning. So, a gearbox must be inspected for leakages and the leakages sorted out immediately to avoid that scenario of losing it due to neglect.

A gearbox must be serviced periodically. There are gearboxes that the manufacturers have made whose fluid will last longer and no need for regular service if driving in normal conditions.

The bottom line here is modern cars demand a lot of knowledge acquisition to be able to give them the best-recommended treatment when they break down.

Sometimes car owners must upgrade their mechanics to mechanics that have invested in new technology study for effective vehicle repair and performance.
