Opposition unlikely to field one candidate in 2021, says ANT's Mugarura

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party has warned that an opposition coalition may not be possible for the 2021 general elections.

The party's electoral commission chairperson Dan Mugarura said the submission of signatures for presidential candidates by various parties is a clear indication that the opposition has failed to rally behind a joint candidate.

Mugarura however said that by contesting separately, the various parties would nevertheless deny the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the required percentage of votes to win outright and trigger a runoff election.

"We are getting interference by security organisations so we have not had time to sit down and develop a properly thought out coalition. If none of us gets to the top, we should at least deny the incumbent the required 51%," Mugarura said.

He was speaking during the submission of the party's signatures for the nomination of ANT presidential hopeful Gen. Mugisha Muntu.

Muntu's former party the Forum for Democratic Change has submitted the required signatures to the Electoral Commission for the nomination of their presidential flag bearer Patrick Oboi Amuriat for the forthcoming elections.

Candidates are required by law to submit signatures from two thirds of all the districts in the country.
