There is no denying, natural hair has taken the world by storm. Who knew, a few decades back that relaxers would be in the back seat?

Yet here we are with many women, of all ages choosing to go natural. As with all waves, it is easy to jump onto the bandwagon with high expectations but before you leap, take into account the fact that there is life after the big chop.

To begin with, the freedom and joy of not sitting under a hot dryer, or making frequent trips to the salon is very liberating. However, keep in mind that you might need to learn to do the hair care yourself.

According to Ashraf Katongole of Ashiliyz Kats hair salon, natural hair requires a lot more attention than relaxed hair because of the nature of our African hair. "It easily dries, suffers shrinkage and so one will not realise length as fast as when the hair is relaxed," he points out.

When one has done the big chop, they need to invest first and foremost in a spray bottle, which is the holy grail of natural hair care. "Water is natural hair's best friend and one needs to spray the hair often in order to keep it moist. Everyone has a different concoction in their spray bottle; some add conditioner, aloe vera , oil but the constant ingredient is water," he says.

Next, one needs a wide toothed comb to help in detangling the hair. Small combs not only hurt but also cause breakage when combing. Natural hair needs wider toothed combs.

A good quality leave-in conditioner is a must have because it keeps the hair manageable and in good condition.

According to Derrick Sekamatte a hair stylist,  frequently conditioned hair is easier to manage and style.

"In addition, one needs a good butter or oil to seal in the moisture from the water," he adds. Shea butter is a favourite among ‘naturalistas' and does a good job," he says.

Lastly, a satin bonnet worn every night will keep the hair from drying up. Some people prefer to sleep on satin pillow covers instead the point is satin does not absorb the moisture hair needs, unlike cotton.

Armed with these one is well on their way to the growth of healthy natural hair.
