Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has been appointed as the director of the World Universities Network (WUN).

"This is an important recognition of Makerere University as one of the top research universities in the world and I believe that it will spur research at Makerere," he noted in a Monday evening tweet.

"I have been appointed director of the World Universities Network in recognition of my stewardship of Makerere University. This will surely spur research at Makerere University, as the network solicits for research funding to support its members," Nawangwe said in an interview with New Vision.

"Earlier this year I was also appointed member of the Governing Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities," he added.

Makerere University was admitted to the World Universities Network earlier this year. The WUN is a network of the top research universities in each region.

The Worldwide Universities Network is an alliance of 23 research-intensive universities. WUN provides financial and infrastructural support to member universities to foster international research collaboration and facilitate academic mobility.

All the universities in the network are found in 13 countries on six continents, and the network, according to Nawangwe, seeks to advance the frontiers of higher education and research.

The most talented researchers and educators are ever more dispersed globally.

Capitalising on this, Nawangwe added that WUN brings together major universities that sit in widely diverse geographical and cultural contexts, and which in partnership provide an unparalleled richness of talent and resources that are brought to bear on major research problems.
