YUMBE - Nomination for Members of Parliament by the independent Electoral Commission (EC) in Yumbe district was successfully closed.

However, two candidates who showed interest to contest in various constituencies missed out on being nominated.

These are Muzamil Achema, who had the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Swaib Juma Anguyo, an independent, all for Aringa North MP seat in Yumbe.

Kennedy Munduga, the Yumbe district Returning Officer explained the bases on which the duo was not nominated.

He said that 21 aspirants showed up for nomination in the two days but 19 were nominated whereas two did not complete due to inconsistency pertaining to their particulars.

"There is an amendment in the registration of the person act that requires to submit certain documents as proof or support of any variances between the names and those candidates were not able to furnish the same," Munduga said.

He however said that they have a chance to appeal to the EC within seven days from the deadline day to seek nomination based on their defense, regarding their changes on their particulars.

However, Achema said it was unfortunate to him and the people he ought to represent saying his testimonials have ‘Achema Muzamil' whereas his national identity card has ‘Achema Muzamil Chegwa.'

"I blame the government for this failure for I started complaining against this error on my national ID from its issuance but since then, nothing has been done but our NUP lawyer is following this up since they have given me one week to appeal," Achema argued.

The same case applies to Anguyo, though he declined to talk to the media but said he will announce his next move soon.
