Prof Francis Omaswa has applauded the outgoing Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, Kazuaki Kameda for the support his government has extended to Uganda during his four-year tenure.

Omaswa, also the Executive Director of the African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST), commended the Japanese government for its contribution to Uganda's development.

"Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has supported infrastructure development and health service improvements at regional referral hospitals in Uganda, therefore a boast to our health sector," Omaswa said.

He revealed that last year, JICA tasked them to carry out a study in Fort Portal, Mbarara, and Hoima Regional Referral Hospitals to establish why they have the highest maternal mortality in Uganda.

"This came with funding and it helped the government to come up and restore all that was wrong," he explained.

In his bidding farewell message to ACHEST staff, Kameda said Japan is committed to contributing to universal health coverage efforts, adding that meeting Prof. Omaswa was one of the highlights of his four-year stay in Uganda.

Notably, Prof Omaswa received the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize award in Japan's capital Tokyo last year.

The award was in honor of his 30-year career and dedication to addressing the global health workforce crisis across Africa and worldwide.
