The body of a 56-year-old mother who drowned in a city water-channel on May 2 has been recovered. Cissy Namukasa's body was discovered in a swamp in Namuwongo, by a 75-year-old plastic bottle forager, the Police said.

The forager, Salim Kasumba, then alerted the Police who retrieved the body.

"We have been working with KCCA to find the body but had since never been able to make any headway," Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said.

Following the retrieval, Enanga said the family had been able to identify the body as that of Namukasa, by the clothes she was putting on and by the shape of her teeth. However, he said the body would be handed over only after a DNA examination is done.  The body is currently lying at Mulago Hospital morgue.

Footage released by the Police in May from the security cameras at the scene of the incident showed Namukasa joining the road during heavy rain when she fell into a trench.

She was then washed into a manhole, before being swept away at the Nakawa traffic lights.

At the time of her death, Namukasa was a vendor in Bugolobi Market.
