Uganda was awarded membership in 1982 because of it

Since Independence, the Uganda Volleyball Federation has had quite the milestones but former national team coach Neko Muduse Ojala credits a 1981 volleyball tournament as one of his finest moments in the sport.

During his time as the national team coach, he introduced players to a number of firsts including a Commonwealth volleyball tournament that shaped Uganda's growth in the game.

"I took out a national team and landed at Heathrow with ten players in 1981. We never thought that we would be able to take out a team and go to a country like England and play," Ojala said.

The whole experience was not the easiest for the team but it helped with the enlightenment of the whole squad.

"Of course we were not successful but this trip was a first. Just being there and playing with other people on the pseudo world stage was great. We played against the likes of Australia, India, Nigeria, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and Malta," he explained.

It was also during this trip that Ojala contacted FIVB on membership for Uganda. This membership was awarded in 1982 and because of it, Uganda became a member of CAVB.
