The National Resistance Movement (NRM) top leadership in Isingiro North county have started reconciling party members that developed misunderstandings during the just-concluded party primaries.
The animal industry state minister, Bright Rwamirama, is spearheading the process of reconciling losers and winners in Kaberebere town council, Masha, Rwetango and Birere sub-counties.
Rwamirama said the process would cover over the 900 villages of Isingiro district. He said reconciliation is a strategic move to consolidate NRM support in the district.
Isingiro district is one of NRM strongholds in Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM candidates have for years garnered overwhelming support.
"I have called this meeting to reconcile the aggrieved members. The main purpose of these meetings is to convince all those that lost in party primaries to accept defeat and back those that hold the party flag. This will enable us start serious mobilization for the party chairman, President Museveni and all party candidates in the forthcoming elections," Rwamirama said.
On Monday, he facilitated the reconciliation of NRM party members in Kabingo town council, Nyamuyanja and Kabingo sub-counties.
Rwamirama also warned party members against divisive politics and cautioned all party flag-bearers to avoid using abusive language during campaigns.
"What we are doing now is laying a strong foundation for peace and resolving conflicts that resulted from disagreements in the recent party polls. This is what democracy means and it is what has kept the NRM party strong," Rwamirama said.
The Isingiro Resident District Commissioner, Hebert Muhangi, attributed the recent chaos in the NRM primary elections to external enemies and warned all those with party flags to guard them well.
Aaron Turahi, the NRM flagbearer for Isingiro LC5 seat, urged all party members to aim at zero opposition in the district.
"Our aim is to ensure that the Opposition does not get votes in Isingiro district. We can only do this if we remain united and speak one voice as NRM," he said.
Rwamirama (Isingiro North) and Nathan Byanyima (Bukanga North) are the only ones cleared by the NRM tribunal to hold the party flag. The district Woman MP, Isingiro South and Bukanga constituencies are yet to be cleared.
