FDC to pick presidential flag-bearer, says not in talks with NUP

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)party is set to hold elections for its presidential fl ag-bearer on Thursday.

The party also said it is not engaged in any talks with the National Unity Platform (NUP) over fielding a joint presidential candidate.

The two aspirants, Ambassador Wasswa Birigwa (national chairman) and Patrick Amuriat Oboi (party president), have been traversing parts of the country meeting delegates in joint campaigns to canvass for votes.

The party deputy spokesperson, John Kikonyogo, said the candidates are to climax their meetings at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, where they will face the national council members.

Kikonyogo said the leaders decided to use the opportunity to simultaneously promote party values and respond to various queries.

"They even had an opportunity to meet and brief some of the flag-bearers in different areas," he said while addressing journalists during the party's weekly press briefing in Kampala on Monday.

Not in talks with NUP

FDC has also dismissed reports that they were in talks with NUP and other forces on fronting joint candidates ahead of 2021.

"Officially, nobody has written to us to engage in unity talks. Whatever is circulating on social media platforms and anywhere else is false," Kikonyogo said.

Besigye in self-isolation 

Kikonyogo also said the party's former presidential aspirant Col Kizza Besigye went into self-isolation after making contact with another person who was found positive for COVID-19.

"Besigye was meeting some people where one of them turned out to be positive. As a champion in the fight against COVID-19, he decided to isolate himself as a requirement," Kikonyogo said.

"He is fine. The doctor continues to urge Ugandans to observe health ministry guidelines because COVID-19 is real," Kikonyogo said.
