IBANDA - The NRM electoral commission has declared Jovrine Kaliisa as the party flag-bearer for the position of Ibanda district Woman Member of Parliament (MP) come next year's general election.

Kaliisa was declared by NRM electoral commission chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi on Saturday, after a vote recount at the NRM headquarters in Kampala.

The recount followed a petition filed by Kaliisa with the tribunal to resolve the dissatisfactions that resulted from the just concluded NRM party primaries.

The initial tallies on September 4, stated that Jane Bainomugisha had defeated Kaliisa, who is also the incumbent MP.

Bainomugisha was declared the winner by Moses Arimwerenga, the Ibanda district NRM registrar, with 37,606 votes. Kaliisa had garnered 37,439 votes, leaving a difference of only 167 votes.

Margaret Kiboijana had polled 19,319, Elivaida Twesigye 1,555 and Obeth Asimire 607. Bainomugisha's victory sparked anger in Kaliisa's camp who accused her of rigging the vote and conniving with the registrar to switch the results on the declaration forms.

However, after the recount, Kyomukama emerged the winner, with 38,124 votes. Bainomugisha polled 37,666.

Kaliisa said: "I got the truth I have been looking for. I thank the people of Ibanda for patiently waiting for the truth to prevail."

Efforts to get a comment from Bainomugisha were futile as she did not take all the calls.
