Vision Group will today celebrate the World Teachers Day, with as special broadcast on all its television stations and social media platforms, starting at 3p this afternoon. It will involve teachers and other personalities in education; across the country.

Also known as International Teachers Day, World Teachers Day is held yearly on October 5. Since its set up in 1994, the day celebrates the marking of, "Teaching in Freedom" in 1996.

Last year the theme was "Engaging Teachers". It is observed all over the world over since 1994 after the UNESCO Recommendation concerning Teachers.

Its point is to centre around "acknowledging, evaluating and enhancing the instructors of the world" and to give a chance to consider the issues identified with educators and the teaching process in general.

Late year World Teachers' Day honoured the twentieth commemoration of the 1997 UNESCO points concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel, bringing the occasionally disregarded zone of showing staff at Higher Education foundations into the discussion about teachers. In 2018 the teachers' day will be on a Friday, and it is worth following.

The event has consistently been held on October 5 since 1994 and the goal is the same; to honour educators' associations around the world. Its point is to prepare to bolster for instructors and to guarantee that the requirements of future ages will keep on being met by educators.

The day's special broadcast on Vision Group platforms will bring together teachers from across the entire country to talk about the noble work they do. Titled "COVID-19 and our teachers: Impact, lessons, way forward", the panellists, will spur about the most pressing issues teachers in Uganda and worldwide, for that matter, are facing today.

The discussion, hosted by Vision's education editor, Conan Businge, will have a rich panel of seasoned educationists including Bro. Deodati Aganyira, headteacher St. Mary's College, Kisubi; Susan Wamala, headteacher Mukono Boarding Primary School; Bro. Godfrey Lutaaya, headteacher Mugwanya Preparatory School; Dr. Jane Egau Okou, acting director of higher education at the Ministry of Education and sports; and Michael Kironde, the chairperson of Proprietors of Private Education Institutions Association.

Others are Jimmy Turyagenda, headmaster Ntare School; Sr. Gladyce Kachope, headteachers Immaculate Heart Girls', Nyakibale; Martin Ojok, headteacher St Gracious SS, Lira; and Samuel Orogot Okwale, a teacher at Kicinjaji Primary School, Soroti.

The debate, which will be aired live on Vision Group TV stations, Bukedde TV, Urban TV or TV West, will also see teachers from across the country call in and share their views in real time during this landmark event.

Running between 3:00pm and 5:00pm this afternoon, the debate will also be streamed live on the Bukedde and New Vision Facebook pages for participants who may not have immediate access to their television sets. Audience members will also be able to call in and share their thoughts on the topic being discussed.

As indicated by UNESCO, World Teachers' Day speaks to a massive token of the mindfulness, comprehension, and thankfulness showed for the fundamental commitment that educators make in advancement by teaching.

The state minister for higher education Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, says, "Teachers are very important people in any given country, and as Government, we wish them well during their international celebrations today."

The National Chairperson of the Private Primary Teachers Association, Uganda Amos Talemwa, also wished the teachers a great day. "Even amidst the hard times, let us take time and celebrate. We congratulate all our ministers of education and teachers on reaching this day," he said.
