Parliament asks govt to pay candidates' registration fees

Parliament has passed a resolution urging government to intervene and meet the cost of examination registration fees for all candidate classes, for the academic year 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19.

The motion was Thursday (September 1, 2020) presented by the Bugabula south MP, Henry Kibalya, who noted that government is already paying examination registration fees for students in government schools.

He said according to estimations by UNEB, government is likely to spend around sh32 billion for students in private schools.

Kibalya said that countries like Ghana, Malawi and Kenya are already meeting these costs and they would also like the government to reconsider their position and meet these costs as many families are unable to afford.

"We would not like students to return to schools and miss out on exams because many parents lack the capacity to pay school fees," he said.

According to the time table released by UNEB, schools are expected to carry out registration of candidate classes between the 22 of this month (October) until the November 20.
