Cheptegei for October World Half Marathon

Oct 02, 2020

Cheptegei, who earlier this year broke the world 5,000m record, will be making his half-marathon debut.

The world 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei and world 3,000m champion Jacob Kiplimo will lead Team Uganda in the Gdynia 2020 World Half Marathon on October 17.

The stars face stiff competition from Kenya's Bedan Karoki, who is the 2016 world half marathon silver medallist and other world stars.

The event that is expected to feature 157 men and 127 women from 62 teams has attracted world stars such as Eritrea's Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, the 2015 world marathon champion.

Cheptegei, who earlier this year broke the world 5,000m record, will be making his half-marathon debut.

"I know for Cheptegei, it's his first appearance but I know team Uganda will be strong because the last time we were fifth," UAF spokesperson Namayo Mawerere said.

"This competition is based on individual performance and I'm confident that Cheptegei and Chiplimo are a good boost to Team Uganda."

Asian record-holder Abraham Cheroben of Bahrain and European record-holder Julien Wanders of Switzerland are also top contenders.
