Machete-wielding men attack mourners

Kiira region Police spokesperson Abbey Moiti Ngako said five people had reported cases related to being hacked by the thugs to the Jinja Central Police Station.

The Police in Jinja city have arrested 31 people suspected of attacking mourners during a wake at Wanyama village in Bugembe division. The incident happened on Thursday last week.

 Kiira region Police commander Dauda Hiriga told journalists on Friday at his office that the machete-wielding thugs stormed the home of Rosh, who had perished in a motor accident at Naggalama on the Mukono-Kayunga road, recently. Hiriga said as mourners were seated outside the deceased's home, a group of thugs invaded them and hacked them with pangas.

He said others were in possession of implements believed to be used for breaking into people's houses and shops.In the process, the Police said five people were injured and rushed to nearby clinics for medical attention.

Hiriga said Bugembe had remained a crime hot spot for the last two months, iwith a series of incidents, including murder and burglary. He mentioned Wanyama village, Budhumbuli and Kamwanyi zone as the crimes hot spots.
