KAMPALA - The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda on Tuesday pledged his country's full support to Makerere University towards the planned restoration of the Main Building that was burnt down by fire on Sunday.

In a letter to Makerere University vice-chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe, Ambassador Zheng Zhuqiang noted that he was shocked to learn about the unfortunate damage to the building.

"On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda and in my name, I express sincere sympathy to you, your staff and all students of Makerere University. I believe that under the strong leadership of you and the University Council, Makerere University will surely overcome the disaster and rebuild the beautiful campus," Zhuqiang stated.

He also noted that the Embassy and Makerere University had always enjoyed profound relations and that he attached great importance to further developing the partnership.

"I stand ready to provide support at my best capability for the restoration of the building," Zhuqiang said.

On Sunday, fire burnt the iconic Makerere University Main Building that, among others, housed the office of the vice-chancellor, deputy vice-chancellor, council room, university secretary's office and the office of the bursar.

By Wednesday, investigators were still combing through the ruins, to try and establish what caused the fire.
