Four Police officers charged over Katwe exhibit fire

Four police officers attached to Katwe Police have been charged with destruction of exhibits.

The officers include  Apollo Kibuuka, 38, the head of the land desk office at Katwe Police, Bakole Karim the head of exhibit protection, Mariam Nangoobi and Okello Moses all attached to Katwe division headquarters.

They were arraigned before Grade One Magistrate, Albert Asiimwe, of the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo and charged with destruction of exhibits and conspiracy to commit a felony.

However, Kibuuka was charged in addition with two more counts of abuse of office and corruption, where it is alleged he did not recover exhibits worth one million.

They all, however, denied the charges and applied for bail, presenting two sureties each.

The trial magistrate released them on sh300,000 cash bail for Kibuuka and sh200,000 each for Nangoobi and Okello.

Bakole was further remanded as he still has pending charges, which were not granted bail.

Prosecution alleges that on the 14 of this month, at Katwe Police, the accused persons, knowing that the exhibits will be used in judicial process, conspired and set a blaze the exhibits office at the police headquarters at Katwe.

The case was adjourned to October 8, when it will come up for mention.
