KAPALA - The Uganda People's Congress (UPC) party has officially released its election roadmap which started with LC III Chairpersons, Mayors, District Chairpersons and their councilors.

The gazetted party registrars are endorsing flag bearers for nominations by the Independent Electoral Commission (EC) as Party candidates for various local government electoral positions.

Speaking at the party's weekly press conference on Wednesday (September 23, 2020), at the party headquarters in Kampala, Hajji Mahmoud Kazimbiraine, the party's Electoral Commission chairman, said they are going for the last stage of the roadmap.

He said that the last stage involves holding parliamentary primaries to get flag bearers for Members of Parliament who will represent the party in the forthcoming general elections and the same is slated for September 26, starting from 9:00 am to 2:00pm.

"This national exercise started on Monday September 21 and ends on October 1, 2020 and the same is going on well, the party flag bearers are being nominated," Kazimbiraine said.

According to Kazimbiraine, their primaries will only be held in10 districts and the voting method is by secret ballot while observing COVID-19 guidelines.

"I particularly wish to thank the candidates who offered themselves to compete in primaries for various positions. I congratulate those who were handed the flags unopposed and urge them to work hard to make sure that they emerge victorious in those Constituencies," he said.

Kazimbiraine urged the government to work towards upgrading the firefighting equipment so as to meet the challenges of the 21st century such as acquiring airborne capability for containing fire with the help of specially designed planes or choppers among other measures.

"UPC is calling upon the Government to have a broader view on how best to be prepared to combat the threat of fire outbreaks as well as putting in place measures that minimize it in the long run," he said.
