A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Rukungiri district for allegedly caning his own mother to death.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, identified the suspect as Victor Byampire, a casual worker, and a resident of Musana cell, Kyaruyenje parish in Buhunga sub-county.

It is alleged that when the suspect returned home on Monday night, he tasked his mother, Maria Asiimwe with producing sh17,000, which she had earned after selling old poles got from a demolished latrine.

One of the family members revealed that when Asiimwe failed to comply, her son charged picked a stick, and started caning her until she could not wail anymore.

As she was being beaten, the deceased allegedly pleaded with her son to pardon her, but in vain.

"Due to excessive canes and kicks from her son, Asiimwe's condition diminished and later passed on amidst pain," a family member said.

It is alleged that on realising that his mother's life was deteriorating, the suspect fled the scene and went into hiding until the Police later smoked him out on Wednesday morning, to help with investigations.
