Residents in Rubongi sub-county are panicking after one of its councillors tested positive for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The councillor took part in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, where he came into close contact with most of his supporters.

Dr. David Cyrus Okumu said the councilor has been admitted to Tororo general hospital.

"Although we have not registered any death yet in the district as compared to neighbouring Mbale district where six people have so far succumbed to the pandemic, the public should be very careful by observing the Standard Operation Procedures ( SOPS) especially putting on face masks," Okumu.

Okumu said with the partial easing of the lockdown in the district, they expect to have huge traffic flow between Tororo and Malaba border which is likely to lead to increased infection levels unless the public observes all the SOPS.

President Museveni on Sunday eased the lockdown by opening places of worship.

The president also allowed the opening of the borders and Entebbe international airport to only tourists but the state minister for information Peter Ogwang later clarified that the borders were opened to all travellers provided they have a COVID-19 testing certificate.
