NRM Primaries: Twesige trounces Acaali

Sep 21, 2020

He garnered 28,686 votes, representing 42% of the total votes cast

Business in Kagadi town council in Kagadi district came to a standstill on Wednesday as jubilant residents welcomed and congratulated Steven Twesige on becoming the NRM flagbearer for Buyaga parliamentary seat. Twesige trounced seven contestants.

The residents, who traversed the streets of Kagadi town chanting "Kihikire," were later repulsed by the Kagadi Police because they were not observing a social distance, as one of the measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

NRM electoral commission chief Dr Tanga Odoi announced the final result for Buyaga East on Tuesday, at the NRM party offices in Kampala.

Twesige garnered 28,686 votes, representing 42% of the total votes cast, while his closest rival, Buyaga East incumbent MP Eric Musana Acaali polled 27,162 votes.

On September 4, Musana petitioned Tanga Odoi over inflation of figures on declaration forms for Pacwa trading centre polling station.

He alleged that 1,700 votes were in favour of Twesige, instead of about 700 voters at the same polling station.

Kagadi NRM party registrar JC Mikisa Ssalongo was compelled by the two parties to submit the results to Tanga Odoi.

On Monday, supporters of Musana staged a demonstration, with placards protesting the delay by NRM party electoral commission to release results.

The Police had to be called in to calm the situation.
