“You cannot talk about Makerere University without talking about the Ivory Tower.”

FolIowing a fire outbreak at Makerere University's main building on Sunday morning, many are wondering what will happen to documents that cannot be replaced.

Speaking at the university grounds, Alex Kakooza the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Sports conveyed his deepest sympathy to the Makerere community and nation at large on the loss of an iconic tower.

"You cannot talk about Makerere University without talking about the Ivory Tower," he said.

The fire started from the office of public relations, spreading fast to the University's secretary's office, then to the Southern wing which houses human resource records.

"Fortunately, the University was digitising most of its documents, a process which has gone like halfway, and we expect that some documents might have been saved," said Kakooza.
