INDEPENDENCE HISTORY

Prince Nuhu Kyabasinga Mbogo was born in 1835 and was a brother of Kabaka Mutesa I and son of Kabaka Ssuuna Kalema.

He was also an eligible successor to the Buganda Kingdom throne, but he was exiled by the British to Zanzibar in 1893.

He returned two years later and regained his seat as the head of Muslims in Buganda and leading member of the Buganda royal family under the reign of Daudi Chwa.

He was most committed to the spread of Islam. He is referred to as the grandfather of Islam in Uganda. 

He was a silent signatory to the 1900 Buganda Agreement, alongside Zakaria Kisingiri, Stanislaus Mugwanya and Apollo Kaggwa, since he was the head of the royal family then, he was also one of the architects of the present politics in Uganda.

He died on March 10, 1921, and Mbogo schools in Uganda are named after him.
