Voters of the winners for the NRM flag for Jinja city division mayoral seats went into a frenzy when the results were announced.

Nasser Ashraf scooped the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for Jinja city southern division, while Stephen Wante took that of northern.

The results were announced by the Jinja district NRM deputy returning officer, George Wycliffe Kiirya, at 10:00pm on Monday. Ashraf polled 8,256 votes, defeating former Jinja councillor Nelson James Mawanda, who got 1,076 in the two-man race.

Meanwhile, Wante trounced his three challengers after garnering 7,515 votes, followed by Hamisi Nagaya Kiganira (6,254) while Juma Mukose Muyita and Ronald Wambuzi scored 5,940 and 1,748 votes, respectively. The polls were marred with teargas and live bullets.

The violence was at Main Street Primary School, among several other polling stations. The commotion was witnessed at Commercial village, Budhumbuli ward in Bugembe division, where youth confronted polling offi cial Japheri Kakumba, saying he had sided with one of the contenders to declare him winner.

At Main Street Primary School, voting was halted after the Police arrested one of the voters identified as Mau Mau over allegedly disrupting the polls. Police battled with Mau Mau as he attempted to grab a gun from one of the officers.

"Mau Mau is part of us, even if he is supporting a different candidate. The arrest was uncalled for and we shall return to the polls after setting him free," John Malole said. Police heeded to the demand and the exercise resumed.
