On Independence Day, Kampala was the newest city in the Commonwealth.

Kampala became a city on October 9, 1962, when the Duke of Kent handed the Royal charter to the Mayor, Mrs Barbara Saben, affirming the city status - having been a municipality since January 1, 1949.

Kampala city, with an area coverage of 8.25 sq. miles, had about 50,000 inhabitants as at Uganda's independence. Today, the city has over 1.5 million people.

Kampala ceased being Uganda's only city on July 1, 2020, when seven new cities, Arua, Gulu, Jinja, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Mbale and Masaka became effective.
