The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for Kigulu South Constituency in Iganga district have been postponed following the death of a contestant, Stephen Waako.

According to Abubaker Walubi, the Iganga district NRM chairman, an impromptu meeting at the district offices had been guided by party headquarters to put off the polls.

"The NRM party deputy electoral commission chairman, John Arimpa Kigyaji, has guided us that postponement is the best way forward. As of now, we are going to mourn as a family," Walubi declared on Friday morning.

He said Waako had been in the race with, among others, incumbent MP Andrew Kaluya, Milton Muwuma and Iganga LC5 Patrick Kayemba.

Kaluya expressed sadness at the death of Waako, saying despite being opponents, they belong to the same party as comrades-in-arms.

Walubi said a new date for primaries in Kigulu South constituency would be communicated after the deceased had been laid to rest.

"Meanwhile, polls are going on in the rest of the constituencies of Iganga district. These include the municipality and Kigulu North," he assured.
