Simon Shimanya, 46, of Bbumbu-Kiteezi in Wakiso district pleaded guilty to manslaughter, on his first appearance in court today.

A man who killed his wife Viola Kakai, a midwife at the International Hospital Kampala will be sentenced on September 1 by the Chief Magistrate of Nabweru Court Patricia Amoko.

Simon Shimanya, 46, of Bbumbu-Kiteezi in Wakiso district pleaded guilty to manslaughter, on his first appearance in court today. He pleaded guilty before the trial could commence.

Shimanya was arrested two weeks ago by the Anti-Corruption Unit led by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema. Shimanya had gone into hiding after allegedly killing his wife on August 1 with an axe after suspecting that she was involved in an extra-marital affair with a work-mate.

Prosecution led by Timothy Amert today asked the court to hand Shimanya a deterrent sentence since such acts are rampant. Although this was objected to by the defence lawyer saying the accused was a first offender.

In the medical form, it's indicated that Kakai died after reaching the hospital and the postmortem report shows that she sustained serious head injuries which led to her death.

Meanwhile, Shimanya asked the magistrate for a lighter sentence judgment as he did not intend to kill his wife.

"Your worship, I kindly ask for a lighter sentence because I didn't intend to kill my wife, My children have no caretaker and right now I am the one responsible for their wellbeing since their mother is no more," he said.

Amoko remanded Shimanya until September 1 for sentencing.
