COVID-19 in Uganda: 64 new cases, death toll rises

As many as 64 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed by Uganda's health ministry, as the country continues with efforts to curb the spread of the ubiquitous virus.

From the latest set of results done on Monday, three deaths were recorded, bringing the cumulative death toll to 25.

The statistics made public by the health ministry Tuesday afternoon on its official Twitter page show that the cumulative confirmed cases of Ugandans is now at 2,426.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,267 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Breakdown of the 64 new cases

According to the health ministry, 60 of these are contacts and alerts in Kampala (27), Arua (11), Gulu (7), Wakiso (3), Manafwa (2), Adjumani (2), Zombo (2), Amuru (1), Buikwe (1), Hoima (1), Lamwo (1), Lira (1) and Tororo (1).

The group also includes two health workers from Kampala, one returnee from Saudi Arabia and one truck driver from Malaba point of entry.

A ministry statement states: "Eight (8) foreign truck drivers (seven Kenyans and one Congolese) tested positive for COVID-19 at different points of entry and were not permitted to enter the country [Uganda]."

The latest recorded deaths are of a 65-year-old male and two females aged 65 and 70 - all residents of Kampala.
