Gaddafi took power on September 1, 1969 after leading a group of Libyan military officers against King Idris I. The king fled the country and the mornachy was abolished.

August 23, 2011: Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi is overthrown after the National Transitional Council forces took control of Bab al-Azizia compound during the 2011 Libyan Civil War.
