ON THIS DAY 59 YEARS AGO

AUGUST 21, 1961:

Kenyan political activist Jomo Kenyatta was released from prison after nine years.

He was imprisoned during the 1952 Mau Mau rebellion with other nationalist leaders by British colonialists.

Jomo Kenyatta governed Kenya as its Prime Minister from 1963 to 1964 and then as its first President from 1964 to his death in 1978.

The Mau Mau rebellion was a war in the British Kenya Colony between the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (also known as Mau Mau) and the British authorities. Up to 11,000 people, mostly from the Mau Mau, are said to have died in this war.
