A section of Greater Mpigi National Resistance Movement delegates have pledged to rally behind Persis Namuganza, for the position of second national vice-chairperson on the NRM Central Executive Committee.

The position has attracted four contestants including the incumbent, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, former Mityana district chairperson Kyazike Kinobe and Jane Amongin.

The delegates from the three districts of Gomba, Mpigi and Butambala expressed support for Namuganza during a meeting in the Mpigi district council chambers over the weekend. Both Namuganza and Oulanyah were not present and sent representatives. The meeting was also addressed by Moses Karangwa Kaliisa, who is campaigning for the position of the vice-chairperson for the central region.

Some delegates said it is time to give a chance to the young generation in the NRM ruling party to take up leadership positions in the top most organs of the party.

Yiiga Kisakyamukama, the chairperson of Buganda region's NRM youth senior mobilisers, who represented Namuganza, and is drumming up support for her in this region assured the delegates that once they elect Namuganza, she will work tirelessly to ensure that all party structures are functioning and also work with the party chairperson to ensure that all the promises he made, including buying for the district party chairpersons vehicles, are fulfilled.

Namuganza's promises

"There is a need to re-energise the party structures which have been dysfunctional now. Namuganza promises you to work tirelessly to ensure that we build our party together and also bring back life in the party. I humbly ask you to rally behind Namuganza if we are to make all this happen," Wamala said.

Revi Magala, the NRM chairperson for Buwama sub-county, proposed a motion for all the party delegates to rally behind Namuganza, which was unanimously supported by all the delegates present.

The delegates also endorsed the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, for the position of the deputy party chairperson for the northern region, basing on his loyalty to the party.

They said Oulanyah has been tested and proven as a charismatic and resilient leader.

Musa Kajubi, the NRM Mpigi district treasurer, said Oulanyah has shown his loyalty to the party and the party chairperson, President Museveni. "Hon Oulanyah is fit for the position. He has always represented the interests of the party and he is such a knowledgeable man" Kajubi said.

Oulanyah is up against the incumbent, Sam Engola, Dr Samuel Odongo Oledo and Timothy Okee Jokkene.
